One stood out to me in particular, DWP 2019: From oh fuck, to fuck ya! -- a creatives guide to actually making money. It was hosted by Courtney Zerizef of Homeroom. The talk was about how creative businesses ought to price their work through (spooky words) business finance analysis! Woah. Most of the other workshops I went to had kind of an "inspirational" vibe, and that's great, but doesn't provide much helpful, applicable information. Courtney Zerizef's workshop was different; it was DIRECTLY focused on a specific need in the creative business industry. What's the need? Most don't know how to price their work. I certainly fell into that camp. The workshop opened my eyes with info that both made sense and I could apply immediately to my business. Courtney's presentation took us through figuring out how to price work based on revenue, business expenses, margins, and living expenses (salary). It was 90 minutes of inspiring, thoughtful, engaging, humorous, and very insightful information. I learned so much!! Mind=blown. I believe money creative artists that are running their own businesses can truly benefit from workshops like this. I have only been in business for one year, and taking this class has helped set the foundation for what I should be doing as a small business owner and the things I should be thinking about, in order to set myself up for success. Based on my background, I know an extensive amount of business and accounting concepts, but applying them to my own photography business has been an entire different ball game and quite challenging. Courtney did a great job of taking fundamental accounting concepts and explaining how they are relevant to a photography business and how to actually apply them to our own business. Courtney is extremely intelligent, knowledgeable, and her simple, real life examples are entirely valuable. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to take this class so early on in my entrepreneurial journey and know that it will be so beneficial for my financial future.
